Evening Exchange

Last night, we hosted the Anchorage Convention and Visitors Bureau's Evening Exchange. ACVB members lined the walls of our hangar with thier displays and tables full of delicous food. We had a long line in our parking lot as people waited to ride in one of our floatplanes. Though the weather was overcast and the winds made for a few bumps, the folks who attended were very interested in getting a chance to fly in a seaplane. Here we see Chris folding up tables after the evening's activities were over.

Enjoying Some Great Alaskan Weather

Summer has arrived! With warmer temperatures and more sunny days, Lake Hood is buzzing with more activity everyday. The last few days have brought us good weather and has made for some spectacular flightseeing trips.

This photo was taken at Derrikson Bay after landing on a Prince William Sound flight tour. With the month of May on it's way out and June fast approaching, we are looking forward to more great flights and wonderful Alaskan weather.

This is Scott, one of our pilots, and Troy tying up 6KT after it had been put in the water. The Gator drove the plane over to a ramp on the south shore of the lake and pushed it into the water. Scott taxied the plane to our dock where Troy caught it, spun it around and, after Scott hopped out, began securing the lines to the dock cleats.

With more planes in the water the pilots that weren't flying over the winter were able to start their touch-and-gos, the series of maneuvers designed to refamiliarize the pilot with the planes after the long hiatus that winter brought about.

The sunny and windy weather over the last few days cooperated to clear Lake Hood of ice. We have two planes in the water now, and the rest of our fleet should be in by this time next week. The attached picture is of the Gator, the truck constructed to pickup and move our floatplanes in and out of the water.

First bear of the season.

We saw the first bear of the season just a few days ago. The hour and a half Glacier and Wildlife Tour flew west of Anchorage to the Triumvirate and Caps Glacier and circled around Mt. Spurr. A few moose had been spotted on the flight to the glaciers and, on the way back, a medium-sized black bear was spotted running along a grassy ridge.

Change from winter to summer.

It's the last day of April and, as you can see, the ice on the lake is breaking up. The majority opinion here at Rust's is that the lake will be completely free of ice anywhere from May 7th to May 9th. While the lake is like this we operate wheeled planes, but as soon as it clears up we can put the floatplanes in the water.
